Czech composer Josef Suk completed his symphonic poem "Ripening" about ten years after the death of his wife and her father, composer Antonin Dvořák, events which inspired his mournful symphony "Asrael" and subsequent works. But in "Ripening" Suk is now older (mid-40s) and, having lived through sorrow, found in a Czech poem ("Zrání," or "Ripening") the poetic metaphor of what he felt after struggling to overcome: praise for wheat reaching toward the sun, remaining hardy and enduring storms to be able to turn beautifully golden in its ripening. Further beautiful ripening happened at its premiere. The work was composed during the brutal struggles of WW I and premiered in an all-Suk program on October 30, 1918 as the first concert of the Czech Philharmonic after the post-WW I founding of the new Czechoslovakia. And so Suk’s “Ripening” becomes a testament of endurance to overcome life’s tragedies as it concludes with a triumphant finale including a wordless women’s chorus through which, as Suk said, “shimmers a hymn of affirmation of life.” Josef Suk’s “Ripening” is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
