Dmitri and Maxim Shostakovich
Dmitri Shostakovich wrote much of his music with qualities of conflict, anxiety, and sardonic humor while under constant scrutiny and threat from Soviet officials, including Stalin. But for the cheerful event of his son's 19th birthday (in 1957, four years after the death of Stalin), Shostakovich composed a piano concerto filled with lighthearted charm and fun. His son, Maxim Shostakovich (later a conductor), was the soloist in the premiere performance for his Moscow Conservatory graduation concert on THIS DATE, May 10th in 1957. Yefim Bronfman is the soloist in the Dmitri Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2 for today's Midday Masterpiece.
