In 1886 Tchaikovsky was made an honorary member of the Saint Petersburg Chamber Music Society and promised a new chamber work dedicated to them. After frustrated starts, he wrote to his brother in June 1890: "I began it three days ago and am writing with difficulty, not for wont of new ideas, but because of the novelty of the form. One requires six independent yet homogeneous voices. This is unimaginably difficult." But in the end he was satisfied and even enthusiastic, writing again to his brother two weeks later about his draft, "At the moment I'm terribly pleased with myself." About a month after that he wrote to the founder of the Chamber Music Society, "This is my first attempt to break free from the quartet. The sextet is such a wonderful grouping! How convenient this turned out to be, so rich in resources!" After test performances and revisions, he approved the final sextet and titled it "Souvenir de Florence" as he wrote one theme while in Italy. An expanded version of the sextet for string orchestra is today's Midday Masterpiece.
