1789 was not a happy year for Mozart: his esteem had fallen, and he needed to borrow money because his wife was ill with a difficult pregnancy and their child didn’t live a full day after birth. And though there are some musical moments that reflect his emotions during this most unhappy year, the sunny Mozart optimism shines through his tuneful Clarinet Quintet (but even the clarinetist for whom he wrote the Quintet earned more than him for the premiere performance). It's today's Midday Masterpiece.
