Franz Berwald (1796-1868)
Because the music of Swedish composer Franz Berwald (1796-1868) was generally ignored during his lifetime, he was forced to make his living as the manager of a sawmill and glass factory. He even started an orthopedic and physiotherapy clinic and invented highly regarded devices for children with congenital spinal deformities. His music being met with indifference in his native Sweden, he tried Paris; same thing. Vienna liked his music, but that admiration didn't follow him back to Sweden. In his sixties, Sweden began to take notice of his music and Berwald was even made a professor of composition in 1867. But, sadly, he died the next year. It was after his death when his music gained wider recognition including his Symphony No. 3, titled “Sinfonie Singuliere,” which finally had its premiere in 1905, 37 years after his death. It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece.
