1803 Portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven by Christian Hornemann
Beethoven premiered his Septet for clarinet, horn, bassoon, violin, viola, cello, and double bass in April 1800. It was such an immediate success that unofficial copies circulated, both spreading Beethoven’s name and ensuring its demand when it was finally published in 1802. Arrangements for different instruments were soon written and published, including one by Beethoven himself (as a trio for piano, clarinet (or violin) and cello, published in 1803 as his Op. 38), which reveals the avocational popularity of music making and wide instrumental training at the time. For the next nearly 30 years of Beethoven’s life the Septet remained just about his most popular composition, to his lifelong vexation for it overshadowing his greater masterpieces. Beethoven’s still popular Septet is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
