Violinist Joseph Joachim and composer Johannes Brahms in their younger years
Johannes Brahms composed his Double Concerto for violin and cello specifically for a cellist who had already been a frequent collaborator on chamber works, and the violinist Joseph Joachim, with whom Brahms HAD been good friends but for many years had been estranged after siding with the wife in Joachim's divorce. But the dispute became irrelevant as they both grew older and Joachim saw the Brahms Concerto as an olive branch and humbly accepted the offering.
Joachim and the cellist, Robert Hausmann, performed the work many times during the season of its premiere, with Brahms conducting. It would be Brahms’ final orchestral composition. The Brahms Double Concerto with violinist Itzhak Perlman and cellist Yo Yo Ma is today's Midday Masterpiece.
