Ernest Chausson by P. Frois, ca. 1885, Bibliothèque nationale de France [via WikiPedia; PD]
Through most of the 19th century, any purely symphonic music such as symphonies or chamber music performed in France was largely written by German composers. French composers were focused on ballet and opera. Until 1871 and the establishment of the Société Nationale de Musique in 1871 to promote French music. Then French composers began to write symphonies, such as in 1885 when Édouard Lalo began his Symphony in G-minor; Camille Saint-Saëns produced his "Organ" Symphony in 1886, and Ernest Chausson premiered his only symphony in 1891. Chausson’s three-movement Symphony is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
