Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
The early 1800s saw a sudden interest in the guitar. Franz Schubert took it up in his teens and later had weekly practice and lessons with Vienna's star Italian guitarist Mauro Giuliani. Czech composer Wenzel Matiegka, now in Vienna, was also a renowned guitarist. In 1814, Schubert discovered Matiegka's Notturno for Flute, Viola and Guitar and adapted this trio into a quartet by reworking the viola part and adding a cello. The charming new arrangement became a popular piece, and rightly so. Don’t miss Schubert’s charming Quartet for Guitar, Flute, Viola & Cello for today’s Midday Masterpiece.
