Thomas de Hartmann in 1906.
Composer Thomas de Hartmann was born in Ukraine in 1884. His 1935 cello concerto was inspired by the anxiety of the 1930s, the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany and de Hartmann’s own recollections of local Jewish folk musicians. While not being Jewish himself, de Hartmann felt a strong connection to Jewish traditions, and the piece is deeply influenced by Jewish musical folklore. The Concerto fell into obscurity after its 1952 performance and was recently brought to the attention of cellist Matt Haimovitz who was determined to resurrect it. Haimovitz writes that the concerto concludes in “a celebration of love, lighting our way through the darkness.” The Thomas de Hartmann Cello Concerto is today's Midday Masterpiece.
