Czech composer Antonín Dvořák wrote his “New World Symphony” while teaching in America. He finished it in New York on May 24th of 1893 and, before it premiered in December, on June 3rd he arrived for the summer in the Czech community of Spillville, Iowa, where three days later he began writing his “American” String Quartet No. 12 and finished it within two weeks. It premiered in Boston on New Year’s Day of 1894, two weeks after the premiere in New York of his “New World Symphony” in December of 1893. The “American String Quartet” by Antonín Dvořák is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
