Though it was written in 1880 as a celebration of Russia’s successful defense against Napoleon’s invading armies in 1812 (the French national anthem (the Marseillaise) is heard overtaken by cannons and Russian folk tunes), Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” has been used in everything from TV commercials for breakfast cereal to a love scene in a Woody Allen comedy. And its thunderous orchestration and over-the-top energy with cannons and church bells (often simulated with other instruments) make it perfect and popular music for the 4th of July. Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” is today’s Midday Masterpiece! (Followed by the 30-minute “Romantic” Symphony No. 2 from 1930 by American composer Howard Hanson.)
