Classical Music Playlist, July 5, 2024
Robert Schumann’s only Cello Concerto was never performed in his lifetime. It premiered in 1860, four years after his death, on the 50th anniversary of his birth. The concerto was virtually forgotten for the rest of the 19th century but many now consider it one of the great cello concertos. TODAY is the 100th anniversary of Hungarian cellist János Starker’s birth and we’ll feature him in performances through the entire 2pm hour, beginning with Robert Schumann’s only Cello Concerto for today's Midday Masterpiece.
