English composer Edward Elgar completed three chamber works in the English countryside at the secluded cottage "Brinkwells" in West Sussex found by his wife Alice. Here he completed his Violin Sonata, Op 82, String Quartet, Op 83, and Piano Quintet, Op 84. Along with the Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85 of 1919, these would be his final major compositions.
The String Quartet was written on request from the cellist of the Brodsky Quartet, to whom Elgar dedicated the Quartet (though they did not give the premiere performance in 1919, by this time all members being advanced in age). Elgar's beloved wife Alice loved the second movement which she likened to "captured sunshine," and this was played when Sir Edward laid her to rest in April 1920.
Elgar's String Quartet in E-minor is today's Midday Masterpiece, performed by the Brodsky Quartet. And that being the case, perhaps some clarification is due:
There have been THREE Brodsky Quartets.
1. Founded by violinist Adolph Brodsky in 1884 while Brodsky was professor at the Leipzig Conservatoire.
2. In 1895, Brodsky formed a second Brodsky Quartet when he settled in Manchester. It was to this Quartet that Elgar dedicated his String Quartet.
3. 1972 in Manchester the Cleveland Quartet formed, later renamed the Brodsky Quartet after Adolphe Brodsky's association with Manchester. This Quartet performs the Elgar Quartet for today's Midday Masterpiece.
