Sir William Walton by Bassano Ltd, 3 April 1937. Photographs Collection NPG.
English composer William Walton's First symphony from 1935 is as intense a listening experience as it was for him to compose. Full of turmoil, passion, malice and melancholy, his work on it coincided with a relationship breakup. The final movement gave him especial grief, with his fourth attempt the eventual accepted version which concludes triumphant, though perhaps with a musical question mark. Sir William Walton's Symphony No. 1 is today's Midday Masterpiece.
