Summering at a charming rural estate can be inspiring. Tchaikovsky’s sister married into a family with a beautiful estate in Ukraine, and it became the composer’s favorite refuge. He loved the land, he loved that he had family there, and found the whole thing inspiring enough that he composed a symphony while summering there in 1872 and included local folk songs including one sung to him by the family butler. The result of all this happiness is Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2, today's Midday Masterpiece.
