As Dmitri Shostakovich was rehearsing his 4th Symphony, a scathing review of his recent opera was published by an official Communist Party newspaper. This was dangerous in 1930s Soviet Russia with Stalin having political and cultural figures arrested or executed who strayed too far from Soviet ideals into the avant-garde, the rebellious and the "decadent." Fearing his safety, Shostakovich shelved his 4th symphony and began work on his 5th to quell the campaign against him. The result was a triumphant success that also elicited perhaps more discussion than any 20th century symphony. The symphony pleased Soviet officials, critics and the public. But were they all interpreting it differently? Did Shostakovich pander to Soviet demands, or is the 5th a subversive statement against oppression? Perhaps yes on all counts, as the music has been likened to a blank canvas on which every listener projects his own sensibilities. It is perhaps for this reason that the 5th remains the most popular symphony of his fifteen. With profound emotions in every movement and musical innovation, the Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 is today's Midday Masterpiece.
