Mily Balakirev (1837-1910)
In the mid 1800s Russian composer Mily Balakirev gathered around him four young composers with limited musical education - Alexander Borodin, César Cui, Modest Mussorgsky and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov; collectively known as "The Five" - and impressed upon them the need to create music on Russian themes separate from the European and, especially, German model. Though he had a terribly problematic personality, especially later, and alienated himself from his disciples, Balakirev remains one of the most important figures in the development of a Russian national music. His Symphony No. 1 is today's Midday Masterpiece.
