A replica of inventor Johann Denner's clarinet
The man credited with inventing the clarinet is instrument maker Johann Christoph Denner who was born on this date, August 13th, in 1655. The instrument then underwent numerous modifications by the time Mozart composed his only Clarinet Quintet in 1789. And in the 100 years since then, only about four significant Clarinet Quintets had been written until Johannes Brahms composed his only Clarinet Quintet in 1891. Brahms had actually retired from composing when he was inspired by a clarinetist. So he came out of retirement and wrote his Quintet, a Clarinet Trio and Two Sonatas for the clarinetist. Composed when he was at the height of his powers in the twilight of his life and expressing an understandably reflective mood, the Brahms Clarinet Quintet is widely recognized as one of THE great works of chamber music, and it’s today’s Midday Masterpiece as we celebrate today’s birthday of the instrument’s inventor.
