Czech composer Antonín Dvořák held a lifelong fondness for his Symphony #3. It was the first of his symphonies ever fully performed, the 1874 premiere conducted by Bedrich Smetana (who was famous at the time whereas Dvořák was mostly still unknown). And as a judge for a state fund, based on the strengths of the symphony, Johannes Brahms awarded Dvořák a financial prize for young composers in need who show promise (though Dvořák didn’t know that Brahms was a judge until much later). Such memories make it understandable that Dvořák fondly leafed through the score a few days before his death. Dvořák’s Symphony #3 is today's Midday Masterpiece.
