Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s suite Church Windows doesn’t depict scenes in the stained glass of actual church windows, but rather the music came first, then the title of the suite, then the individual movement titles. The music began as Respighi’s recast of three Gregorian Chant melodies for solo piano. He then orchestrated those and added a fourth movement to conclude the orchestral suite. A friend suggested the suite title “Church Windows,” then the two of them decided what biblical scene the music might depict, and those scenes became the four movement titles in the suite. Respighi’s “Church Windows” is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
