As brief as Mozart’s life was (35), the young man they called “The Spanish Mozart” lived only about half as long, until age 19. Therefore, we have very little music by Juan Arriaga (who also happens to share the same birthdate with Mozart, but exactly 50 years later). A prodigy, wIthout musical training he composed an opera at age 15. Spanish patrons recognized his talent and paid his way to attend the Paris Conservatory, where he graduated in just three years. He then wrote and published three string quartets, one symphony and a handful of other music before his untimely passing just ten days before his 20th birthday. His only symphony, in D-minor, is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
