Danish composer Asger Hamerik (1843-1923)
Asger Hamerik was the most well-known Danish composer after the earlier Niels Gade. From 1871 he served as director of the Peabody Institute Music Conservatory in Baltimore for 27 years, until 1898. During that time he composed his Symphony No. 5, titled “Symphonie Serieuse” or "Serious Symphony" and that title matches its musical mood (without being excessive). It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece.
