Composers like Schubert, Schumann and Wagner, plus musicologists over the centuries, have used superlatives of all kinds to describe the String Quartet No. 14 by Beethoven. Revolutionary at the time for its many musical innovations, it was also the composer's own personal favorite string quartet. The String Quartet #14 by Beethoven is today's Midday Masterpiece.
Wagner said of the opening: “the most melancholy sentiment ever expressed in music.”
Writer J.W.N Sullivan called it “the most superhuman piece of music that Beethoven has ever written.”
Schubert remarked, "After this, what is left for us to write?" (The quartet was the last musical work he chose to hear before he died.)
Schumann said that this quartet had a "grandeur...which no words can express.” And that it stood “on the extreme boundary of all that has hitherto been attained by human art and imagination."
Beethoven even wryly commented about it, “Thank God, less lack of imagination than before.”
