The entire conception of Gustav Holst's suite "The Planets" is astrological not astronomical. In about 1913 the brother of English composer Arnold Bax, Clifford Bax, introduced Holst to astrology. It so happened that Holst had in his library a book published in 1912, "The Art of Synthesis," by astrologer Alan Leo which describes the effect on a person's temperament of each planet. This book may have influenced Holst's composition and each movement's subtitle, such as, "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity," "Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age," "Mars, the Bringer of War," and "Venus, the Bringer of Peace," and so on. Holst then completed the seven movements of "The Planets" between 1914-1917 (and would continue to cast personal horoscopes for his friends the rest of his life). We’ll celebrate Gustav Holst's 150th birthday tomorrow with his entire suite of "The Planets" for today’s Midday Masterpiece.
