It’s been noted that, despite Ernest Bloch attributing the major themes in his 1938 Violin Concerto to Native American songs he heard in New Mexico, similarities to his more personal Jewish themed compositions can be heard. Such as from his Sacred Service, Avodath Hakodesh, which Bloch describes as, “a setting of Hebrew texts used in the Reform temples of America.” Bloch said specifically that his Violin Concerto portrays “the complex, glowing, agitated soul that I feel vibrating through the Bible.” Performed by Jascha Heifetz protégée Zina Schiff, the Ernest Bloch Violin Concerto is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
