Robert and Clara Schumann in 1847
Robert Schumann's focus in 1842 was writing chamber music when he composed string quartets, piano trios, a piano quartet and, what many have called one of the greatest chamber works of all time, his Opus 44 Piano Quintet in E-Flat. He dedicated the Quintet to his wife Clara who gave its first public performance in January 1843. She called it "splendid, full of vigor and freshness," and performed the work throughout her life. Robert Schumann's masterful Piano Quintet is today's Midday Masterpiece.
