Franz Schubert’s String Quintet in C-major is generally regarded as his finest chamber work, as well as one of the greatest of all chamber compositions. American music writer and composer Jan Swafford wrote, “Everything about this work is extraordinary – its breadth of expression from deepest tragedy to exultant joy to transcendent peace." It was Schubert’s final instrumental composition written a couple months before he died at the age of 31 in 1828, and it’s today's Midday Masterpiece.
