Czech composer Antonín Dvořák arrived in New York in 1892 to be the Director of a new music school and to help American composers create a uniquely “American” sounding classical music. He found plenty of homegrown music already here that he said should be the basis of an American music: African-American spirituals, Native American songs and dances, and even American popular songs such as those by Stephen Foster. He demonstrated how one can synthesize and adapt these into something new by composing his Symphony No. 9 ”From the New World.” It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece.
