Fanny Mendelssohn | source: Library of Congress
As a Christmas gift for her artist husband, Fanny Mendelssohn composed a work for solo piano titled “The Year,” with one movement for each month (plus a finale). This 1841 composition was unpublished until 1989 but Mendelssohn’s revised and final version from 1842 was held by her family until 2000. Ukraine-born pianist Anna Shelest has recently released her new recording of the entire “Year” in the final version, and it’s today’s Midday Masterpiece.
