Classical Music Playlist, October 17, 2024
At the rehearsal for the December 1908 London premiere of the Symphony No. 1 by Edward Elgar, conductor Hans Richter said to the musicians, "Gentlemen, let us now rehearse the greatest symphony of modern times, written by the greatest modern composer – and not only in this country." His words may have been accurate as within a year the symphony had been given a hundred performances around the world. The Symphony No. 1 by Edward Elgar is today's Midday Masterpiece.
