Franz Liszt's title pretty much sums it up: "A Faust Symphony in Three Character Sketches after Goethe: Faust, Gretchen, Mephistopheles." Rather than retelling the story of Goethe’s tale of Faust - the aging scholar who sells his soul to the Devil - Liszt paints musical portraits of each of the three main characters. Liszt added a final chorus to mirror the end of Part II of Goethe's epic play when Faust is saved and his eternal salvation earned. Franz Liszt's "A Faust Symphony" is today's Midday Masterpiece as we celebrate the composer on his 213th birthday!
