Martha Graham and ensemble rehearsing Appalachian Spring | photo: Library of Congress, Music Division
Today is the 80th anniversary of Aaron Copland’s ballet “Appalachian Spring.” It premiered on October 30th in 1944. Co-commissioned by choreographer and dancer Martha Graham, the original music called for only 13 instruments (as the performing space for the premiere was limited), and the music won Copland the Pulitzer Prize in 1945. The slightly shorter Suite in its original scoring for just 13 instruments is today's Midday Masterpiece.
