Danish composer Carl Nielsen (appx 1908)
Danish composer Carl Nielsen wrote his Symphony No. 5 after World War I, which had changed everything. The symphony works its way through chaos, including ad lib drums making up their own erratic rhythm (like sounds of war), to a rebuilt musical world completely redefined. As the composer said, “no single one of us is the same as before the war.” Nielsen’s Symphony No. 5, with Herbert Blomstedt conducting the San Francisco Symphony, is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
