Beethoven in 1805 by Joseph Willibrord Mähler
Beethoven began to write his longest and final Piano Concerto while Napoleon was bombarding Vienna in 1809; a situation Beethoven described as “nothing but drums, cannons, men, misery of all sorts.” And that situation may have added to the character of the work. This was one of fourteen compositions Beethoven dedicated to his friend and greatest patron, Archduke Rudolph, youngest son of Emperor Leopold II and youngest brother of Emperor Franz II. It appears to have been a music publisher that attached the name "Emperor Concerto" to the work. Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 is today's Midday Masterpiece.
