Listeners today may be troubled to learn that many of their favorite Handel works are—to some degree—indebted to other composers for their source material.
Some have called Handel’s recycling of other composers’ music creative borrowing. Others call it plagiarism.
But, as 19th century author Samuel Butler said, in his assessment of Handel: “Honesty consists not in never stealing, but in knowing where to stop in stealing, and how to make good use of what one does steal.”
