"Nocturne" (1878) by American artist James McNeill Whistler
An orchestral work by Debussy and a series of piano pieces by Chopin are worlds apart in sound and style, yet both bear the title “Nocturne.”
Obviously, these two composers have very different ideas about the meaning of the word—and so have others, as we’ll hear in this hour, as we explore the Nocturne from Mozart to Copland—and beyond.
