The Capriccio Connection

It’s been defined as “a lively piece, composed freely and without adhering to the rules for any specific musical form.”
Other definitions may vary, but all are equally vague—and no wonder, since composers have used the term “capriccio” for everything from short piano pieces to full-scale orchestral works.
That diversity is front and center in this hour, with music by Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Verdi, Bizet, and Brahms, as well as Felix Mendelssohn— and his sister Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel.
