Turandot
by Giacomo Puccini
Puccini’s grand spectacle of legendary China stars Martina Serafin in the role of the ice princess and Marcelo Álvarez as the unknown prince who must thaw her heart or die.
The composer's final opera is an epic fairy tale set in a China of legend featuring a most unusual score with an astounding and innovative use of chorus and orchestra. Puccini and his librettists dispensed with satirical references to current Italian politics from the source material and set this opera in a China of “legendary times,” a mythical land where the clash of the sexes is drawn in high relief.
The opera contains moments of sheer melodic beauty in Puccini’s most lyrical vein, most notably in the tenor’s unforgettable song of triumph, “Nessun dorma!,” which opens Act III.
