Excellence in Jazz is celebrating the women of jazz all month during Women's History Month. Tonight we shine the spotlight on vocalist Mary Stallings.
-
Born and raised in San Francisco, Mary Stallings began singing in clubs such as the Hungry I and El Matador with Ben Webster, Cal Tjader, and the Montgomery Brothers.
-
Dizzy Gillespie was so impressed with Mary, he invited her to perform with his band at the 1965 Monterey Jazz Festival. That led to a three- year residency as Count Basie’s lead vocalist.
-
After retiring from music to raise her daughter, Mary began recording and performing again in the ‘80’s. Stallings has released 13 albums. Her latest, “Songs Were Made To Sing,” features a brilliant reworking of Oliver Nelson’s “Stolen Moments” and Tadd Dameron’s “Lady Bird.”
Also featured tonight: Nina Simone, Anne Sajdera, and Iris Ornig.
