Excellence in Jazz is celebrating the women of jazz all month during Women's History Month. Tonight we shine the spotlight on singer and pianist Carmen McRae!
- She began studying the piano at age 8 and was influenced early on by the music of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington.
- McRae got her first major gig playing in Benny Carter's big band in 1944.
- She also played a starring role in Dave Brubeck and Louis Armstrong's 1961 opera, The Real Ambassadors.
Tonight we'll feature music from Carmen McRae as well as Jenny Klukken and Lolly Allen!
