As a young girl in the 1970's, I loved Sesame Street. They had a video that featured an orange on a kitchen counter. Slowly, items jumped up to find their place on the surface of the orange, forming a face. With flower eyelashes, dust mop hair, and rubber band lips, the orange sprang to life under the spotlight, and sang Habanera from Carmen. I was fascinated!
I didn't realize until years later that they were tricking me into loving opera. I am now a piano teacher, and I credit this video with opening my mind and heart to opera, and other music styles, which I now pass along to my students, hoping the same thing happens to them. Thank you, Sesame Street and Georges Bizet!
