Excellence In Jazz On Campus: Hannah Oldfield
8-9 p.m.
In the debut of our occasional series, Excellence In Jazz On Campus, jazz music director Gary Vercelli sits down with Hannah Oldfield, a senior at Sacramento's Rio Americano High School, to play selections chosen by her and talk jazz. Hannah is a saxophonist and vocalist whose talents have been nurtured by Rio’s award-winning music program under the direction of Josh Murray. She’s headed for the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston this fall.
As a member of Rio’s AM Jazz Band, Hannah has performed in New York City, Monterey and Italy. This summer they will tour Japan. Hannah cites Ella Fitzgerald, Paul Desmond and Charles Mingus among her jazz influences and plans to pursue a career in music.
Serving as guest DJ, Hannah chose all of the tunes for this hour-long program except for one, which was chosen by Gary. It features an extraordinary rendition of Mingus’ “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat,” with lyrics by Joni Mitchell, sung by Hannah backed by her Rio bandmates.
Rounding out the hour are comments by Hannah about her jazz heroes, her passion for the music and the role it plays in her life.
