The year was 2007. Nick Brunner had just moved to Sacramento, Calif., to take a position at Capital Public Radio. This was long before he turned his aspirations toward hosting CapRadio’s Saturday night music show Blue Dog Jam. He moved here on a Friday and in an attempt to become aquainted with his new hometown, he picked up a copy of that week’s Sacramento News and Review and tuned into his local public radio station.
He read a story about a new Sacramento band – Agent Ribbons – and then he heard a promo for Insight featuring the band’s music.
“Hey,” he recalls, “my public radio station is doing something I care about – featuring musicians from the community.” It was an auspicious beginning to his CapRadio career. That night he attended his very first Sacramento concert and became a huge fan of Agent Ribbons.
Next week, Brunner will co-host the 24th annual Sammie Awards at Ace of Spades with singer James Cavern. Today on Insight, he’ll share stories and songs from bands that were honored at the 2007 awards showcase.
