Gayle Brandeis’ latest memoir seeks for meaning in her mother’s suicide.

"Joan Didion says we look for the sermon in the suicide," Brandeis wrote in a letter to her mother. "I’m not sure I’m looking for a sermon. I’m just looking for you."

As Brandeis seeks meaning in her mother’s death, she uncovers a massive project from her mother that she never could’ve guessed; she firmly believed her daughters suffered from rare diseases and created a documentary about them.
