An investigation by Capital Public Radio finds that California Highway Patrol officers were responsible for nearly half of the collisions, they were involved in last year and the number of collisions caused by backing up is on the rise. As a result, the CHP has payed out more than $15 million in taxpayer dollars to cover claims.
Reporter Bob Moffit spent over a year and half investigating the data. He spoke with a number of CHP officers through his reporting including one who claimed, “This is the cost of doing business.”
