While most of the country faced high unemployment and low wages during the Great Depression, the story in the California foothills was much different. Grass Valley and Nevada City were deep into the Gold Rush during the 1930s, and experienced an economic boom that helped shape the development of the region for years to come.
Author Gage McKinney’s book “The 1930s: No Depression Here” explores this unique time in history for Northern Californians. He has an event at the Grass Valley Bookseller Tuesday night for further discussion.
