Race and ethnicity are linked with the quality of health care services a patient receives. That was the finding of a landmark study released 15 years ago, “Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care.” And those disparities are still playing out in medicine today.

Dr. Alicia Fernandez, a professor of medicine at UC San Francisco and general internist at Zuckerberg San Francisco, has focused her research on improving diabetes care, Latino health and immigrant health. She joins Insight host Beth Ruyak in studio to explain the original study, what it found, why it was important and how it’s relevant to today.

She will also speak Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her talk is titled “Health Care Disparities 15 Years After ‘Unequal Treatment.’” A reception is at 5 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public, but reservations are requested via Eventbrite.
