People are crowding into and near Room 4203 at California’s Capitol right now. Today is the first hearing of “the Weber bill,” also known as AB 392. This legislation authored by Assemblymember Shirley Weber would change the legal requirement for police using deadly force from "reasonable" to "necessary." If it passes, California would become the first state in the country to raise the standard above and beyond what the U.S. Supreme Court requires.
