Aladdin, Princess Jasmine and of course, the Genie are onstage in Sacramento this week as the Broadway tour of the award-winning musical continues through June 2 at the Community Center Theater.
The Academy Award-winning Walt Disney Feature Animation film was based on the Antoine Galland interpretation of the Arabic folktale found in "One Thousand And One Nights". The success of the film was founded on the score by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Tim Rice, including the hit song “A Whole New World,” which earned an Oscar for Best Original Song and a Grammy for Song of the Year.
The Disney Theatrical Productions adaptation hit Broadway in 2014 and turned into a touring show. The show features music from the theatrical score, a few songs cut from the film, and new songs written exclusively for the stage. A live-action reboot of the 1992 film is slated for release Friday.
Today on Insight, Major Attaway (playing the role of Genie) and Jacob Dickey (playing the title role of Aladdin) join to discuss the production and the challenges of bringing a childhood treasure to the stage.
